Keswick is the most popular centre for tourism in the Northern
Lake District. The Lake District National Park is an area of
outstanding natural beauty.
In 2004 readers of the Sunday Times Travel Magazine voted Keswick as
their favourite place in England for a rural break.
Keswick's largely traffic free town centre has a wide range
of specialist shops and galleries, a bustling weekly local market,
excellent tearooms and cafes for morning coffees, lunches and
afternoon teas. For the evenings there is no shortage of cafes,
pubs and restaurants offering a range of Cumbrian and International
cuisine.
Whatever you're looking for - history, culture, scenery, activity
or just relaxing, Keswick has something for everyone. For example,
take a gentle stroll from the town centre though beautiful Hope
Park to the shores of Derwentwater, a beautifull lake with
small islands and surrounded by magnificent fells. Alternatively,
walk from Heads House to the top of Latrigg, where there are
open views across Keswick and beyond into Borrowdale. For a more
strenuous walk, head up to the summit of Skiddaw and its even
more commanding views.
For
those in search of culture the Theatre
by the Lake offers music,
theatre, dance and much more. For artists and photographers the
landscape is without equal and the many craft shops in the area
display their creations. Other attractions include the famous Pencil
Museum, the Cars
of the Stars Museum, the Keswick
Climbing Wall and Keswick Leisure Pool.

There
are delightful parks and gardens in Keswick, which
competes annually in the Cumbria in Bloom competion, and had
previously been a winner of Britain in Bloom.
Keswick is an ideal
base for exploring the whole of the Lake District National
Park, and is within easy reach of the historic Cumbrian coast,
the Border city of Carlisle, the North Pennines and Hadrian's
Wall, the Eden Valley and Yorkshire Dales. |
